Surface plasmon delocalization by short-range correlations in percolating metal systems

چکیده
Theoretical and experimental studies of the electromagnetic response of semicontinuous metal films are presented. A scaling theory is developed by solving the surface plasmon eigenproblem. The short-range correlations in the governing Kirchhoff Hamiltonian result in delocalization of the surface plasmon eigenmodes. Although their relative weight in the spectrum becomes asymptotically small for large systems, the existence of these delocalized states modifies the critical indices for the high-order field moments. This modification is confirmed experimentally by the near-field measurement of high-order intensity moments for percolating silver films on glass substrates. Surface plasmon excitation and correlation-induced localization-delocalization transition in semicontinuous metal films
By solving the surface plasmon SP eigenproblem, a scaling theory is developed for the electromagnetic response of semicontinuous metal films. It is shown that short-range correlations in the governing Kirchhoff Hamiltonian result in delocalization of the SP eigenmodes in the center of the spectrum. The subset of those modes has a zero measure so that their relative weight in the spectrum become...

Near-field intensity statistics in semicontinuous silver films over a wide range of surface coverage are investigated using near-field scanning optical microscopy. The variance of intensity fluctuations and the high-order moments of intensity enhancement exhibit local minima at the percolation threshold. This reduction in local field fluctuations results from resonant excitation of delocalized ...
متن کاملFabrication and Characterization of the Fiber Optical Taper for a Surface Plasmon Resonance Sensor
For a fiber optical surface plasmon resonance (SPR) sensor a short part of its cladding should be removed to coat a thin layer of a metal. Usually this is problematic when an optical fiber with small core diameter is used. In this paper, a new method using µliter droplet of the HF acid for short fiber optical taper fabrication is reported. Using this method in a multi-mode optical fiber w...
متن کاملPhysical nature of volume plasmon polaritons in hyperbolic metamaterials.
We investigate electromagnetic wave propagation in multilayered metal-dielectric hyperbolic metamaterials (HMMs). We demonstrate that high-k propagating waves in HMMs are volume plasmon polaritons. The volume plasmon polariton band is formed by coupling of short-range surface plasmon polariton excitations in the individual metal layers.

Harnessing the optical properties of noble metals down to the nanometre scale is a key step towards fast and low-dissipative information processing. At the 10-nm length scale, metal crystallinity and patterning as well as probing of surface plasmon properties must be controlled with a challenging high level of precision. Here, we demonstrate that ultimate lateral confinement and delocalization ...
